OCM BOCES Summer School

This year the focus of OCM BOCES Regional Summer School (RSS) was on student achievement.  For the first time, teachers of courses that end in a Regents exam, were required to administer pre-assessments to their students.  Pre-assessments demonstrate what students know, understand and are able to do. This newly implemented protocol is an essential component of RSS given the limited instructional time frame.  The practice identifies the students’ strengths and stretches.  Pre-assessments enable the teacher to focus instruction on the content and skills needed by their students; instructional time is not squandered teaching things student already comprehend.

Prior to RSS, Pam Dowse, Coordinator of Educational Programs, met with site districts to learn what their needs and concerns were.  As a result, each of the four summer school sites ran a bit differently.  For example, all four sites offered Regents Review Courses.  However, when they were offered differed by site.  At these meetings districts overwhelming expressed a desire for RSS to move to Schooltool for their student management system.  This transition was made.

RSS 2017-18, provided educational opportunities to 2,166 students.  Over 1700 students were registered to take Regents exams and over 580 seats were occupied for the 10 hour Regents Review Courses.  In addition, students participated in courses designed for credit recovery as well as credit accrual.

Pam looks forward to debriefing and collaborating with the districts in the near future so that planning can begin for Regional Summer School 2018-19!
